Andrew Garbarino finds himself in a hot seat as chairman of the U.S. House Committee on Homeland Security, while amped-up Trump administration immigration enforcement actions deliver daily upheavals in Minnesota and elsewhere.</p><p>Garbarino's committee is the main House panel with jurisdictional oversight of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement activities, and more broadly, the Department of Homeland Security and its secretary, Kristi Noem.</p><p>But to the exasperation of the panel’s Democrats and others, Garbarino (R-Bayport) has yet to hold a hearing — or even schedule one — into the ICE enforcement actions that have brought angry standoffs with protesters and violence in Minneapolis that has included the shooting death of Renee Good by an immigration agent and Saturday's shooting death of a man by a U.S. Border Patrol officer, federal officials say. Border Patrol is another component of the Homeland Security Department.</p><p>"I mean, people want us to hold hearings. We’re going to hold hearings," Garbarino said in an interview with Newsday, before Saturday's shooting death. He said, "We're working on it."</p><h6><span style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">WHAT NEWSDAY FOUND</span></h6><ul><li><p>Long Island Rep. Andrew Garbarino (R-Bayport) finds himself in a hot seat as chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security, as Trump administration immigration enforcement actions create controversy</p></li><li><p>Garbarino's committee is the main House panel with jurisdictional oversight of ICE activities and, more broadly, the Department of Homeland Security.</p></li><li><p>But to the exasperation of the panel’s Democrats and others, Garbarino has yet to hold a hearing into the ICE enforcement actions that have brought angry standoffs with protesters.</p></li></ul><p>In a statement Saturday, he said his committee "will closely monitor" the investigation into the latest fatal shooting. He also reiterated that ICE and Customs and Border Protection officials will be appearing before his committee "in the coming weeks." But as previously, he did not provide dates.</p><p>More quietly, Garbarino on Saturday sent a letter to Todd Lyons, the acting head of ICE. Obtained by Newsday, the letter offers Lyons a list of six potential dates — options — on which he apparently can choose to appear before Garbarino’s committee. Most of those offered dates are in March, going from Feb. 10 to as far away as March 18.</p><p>When the shooting news broke on Saturday, Garbarino was out of the country, traveling overseas as part of a congressional delegation trip focused on other security issues.</p><p>“The Committee requests your presence at your earliest opportunity,” Garbarino’s letter to Lyons states. “Please confirm your availability for any of the following dates.”</p><p>Garbarino, in the interview Thursday, conceded it probably won’t be until March that the public will see top officials of ICE, CBP and others from the department testify about the immigration enforcement actions.</p><p>Garbarino also said Noem will appear before the committee sometime in April or May because she has to make an obligatory trek to the Capitol to talk about budget matters and requests required of most federal agency heads.</p><p>"There’s a lot of questions about what’s going on," Garbarino said of the ICE activities and immigration and deportation pushes. "And we will be doing our proper oversight of the agency."</p><p>But the extended and fuzzy timeline is angering Democrats on the Homeland Security Committee and others, incensed at what they see as perfunctory or detached nonspecific promises of some future hearing.</p><p>What is happening in Minnesota and elsewhere, they say, is a national emergency with immediate issues for Congress to scrutinize, including the shooting deaths by federal officers in Minneapolis.</p><p>"Do-nothing Republicans in Congress must force ICE and CBP leaders to testify publicly," the top Democrat on the Homeland Security Committee, Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.), said after the shooting death Saturday.</p><p>"There is an urgent, urgent need to conduct oversight, from this committee, of the Department of Homeland Security," Rep. Daniel Goldman (D-Brooklyn/Manhattan) said. "The urgency in this country right now is what’s going on with ICE."</p><h6><span style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">Tense hearing</span></h6><p>Samples of this outrage spilled out Wednesday during a hearing with several Department of Homeland Security officials who were not involved with ICE or immigration enforcement — but instead cybersecurity, science and transportation security.</p><p>Garbarino, it turned out, had not initially asked that Lyons be there to testify. He later invited Lyons, but only after Democrats complained about not seeing him listed as a witness. Lyons skipped the hearing anyhow.</p><p>Goldman and other Democrats during the hearing took turns expressing bewildered anger about how such a hearing — at this moment in time — could even have been arranged without also demanding top ICE officials or even the DHS secretary be there.</p><p>Turning to the chairman, Goldman said, "I know that you and your colleagues cannot possibly be OK watching secret masked ICE agents barging into homes without a warrant, pulling American citizens out in their underwear, stopping American citizens on the streets and demanding their citizenship.</p><p>"And that, of course, is not even to mention the violence in Renee Good's murder and whatever else we are seeing," Goldman said.</p><p>Thompson called it a "disgrace" that Lyons wasn’t there. And on Thursday, he continued his criticism as all but seven House Democrats voted against a bill to fund the Homeland Security Department, saying it does not go far enough in reining in ICE tactics and alleged misconduct.</p><p>"Republicans in control of Congress, however, are conducting zero oversight and do nothing but send blank check after blank check to DHS," Thompson said, as the bill passed.</p><p>On Monday, Thompson and other committee members are holding a forum at City Hall in New Orleans to hear accounts of what Democrats are calling the "ICE Invasion of Louisiana" terrorizing communities there.</p><h6><span style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">Campaign Issue</span></h6><p>Such criticisms are also starting to play a political role closer to home.</p><p>One of the Democrats seeking Garbarino’s 2nd Congressional District seat this fall — former Suffolk County Executive Patrick Halpin — had already released a YouTube video in the days after Good’s shooting death.</p><p>He asks, "Will Andrew Garbarino, the chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, hold an emergency hearing now to get to the bottom of this madness. What’s it going to take to wake him up?" </p><p>Halpin, in an interview Tuesday, reiterated his video’s message by saying safe borders and streets are needed, but that sending armies of masked ICE agents into cities with minimal training and zero accountability has gone terribly wrong, and "our congressman is complicit."</p><p>"Americans are shocked by what they witnessed in Minneapolis and the chairman has a responsibility to demand accountability and answers," Halpin said. "Silence is complicity, especially in the case of ICE." He said he would be a representative "that will ask tough questions and insist on the truth."</p><p>Nonpartisan political handicappers have so far not rated the race for Garbarino's seat as very competitive. But the district does have more active Democratic voters, 177,878, than Republicans, 168,592.</p><h6><span style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">"Do whatever you need"</span></h6><p>When pressed in the interview, Garbarino emphatically said that, "Nope," he has not been told by the Trump administration or House Republican leaders to stand down or delay his committee’s scrutiny.</p><p>"The speaker told me — do your oversight work. Do whatever you need," Garbarino said.</p><p>Garbarino dismisses comments from critics like Thompson and others as political performance art. "They’re doing what we would do" if the roles were reversed, he acknowledged of the Democratic attacks.</p><p>But he said Thompson and other Democrats know that to get the relevant top officials in front of a hearing takes time and requires arrangements based on everyone’s schedules. And while the committee has investigative subpoena power, he said, there are steps to take before leaping to that — a process that in itself can take weeks.</p><p>While his committee is doing its background work, Garbarino added that, as much as anything, he does not believe ICE and other department officials are ready at this point to even provide real responses to many questions.</p><p>For instance, he said ICE officials aren't going to talk about the Good shooting on the record, given potential law enforcement investigations. “How many times are you going to ask that question?” without getting an answer, he asked about that possible futility.</p><p>Garbarino said that when he gets someone in front of his committee, "I want something to be worthwhile."</p><p>By Billy House</p><p><a href="mailto:billy.house@newsday.com">billy.house@newsday.com</a></p>

Andrew Garbarino, who famously dozed through a vote on President Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill.</p><p>Halpin, a Democrat, launched his 2026 campaign Monday in Babylon, blasting the Republican incumbent for “falling asleep on Long Island families” — after sleeping through and missing the first House vote tied to the key sweeping White House legislation.</p><p>“Our Congressman, Andrew Garbarino, is asleep at the wheel — literally,” Halpin said.</p><p>“He’s been caught snoozing while voting to gut hospitals, slash food assistance and hand billionaires more tax breaks — all while Long Island families can’t keep up with rent, childcare or medical bills.”</p><p>Halpin, who once led Suffolk as the county’s youngest ever top elected official, cast himself as a workhorse ready to “get things done” while citing his extensive political resume.</p><p>Halpin served as county exec from from 1988 to 1991, during which time he launched the Long Island Housing Partnership, expanded community policing and domestic-violence programs, introduced drug prevention in schools and led one of the nation’s top land preservation efforts, his campaign said.</p><p>“I know every corner of this district — full of good, hard-working folks,” Halpin said.</p><p>“I’ll be your go-to congressman no matter if you’re a Democrat, Republican, independent, short, tall, young or old.”</p><p>“You got a problem; I’ll work to find a solution. Whether that’s fixing a pothole or protecting Medicaid, I will find a way to help.”</p><p>Garbarino has meanwhile carved out a reputation as a moderate in his party, breaking ranks to support the congressional January 6 commission, codify same-sex marriage and help pass former President Joe Biden’s bipartisan infrastructure and cybersecurity bills.</p><p>He slept through the first House vote on his party’s linchpin One Big Beautiful Bill — delivering a major nail-biter at the time for Republicans, who ended up passing the legislation by just one vote without him.</p><p>The Senate then revised the House bill and sent it back to the lower chamber for another vote — and Garbarino managed to stay awake to help pass that one.</p><p>He currently chairs the House subcommittee on cybersecurity, has introduced legislation to combat wildlife trafficking and pushed for workforce training programs and affordable housing aid across Long Island.</p><p>He recently touted that he and other Republicans helped quadruple the SALT deduction cap to $40,000.</p><p>But Halpin says Garbarino’s record mostly falls flat at home, accusing the congressman of “going Washington” and failing to deliver while accusing Garbarino of putting billionaires over Suffolk County’s working families.</p><p>Some constituents of Garbarino seem unhappy with their congressman, even within party lines, as hardcore Republicans liken him to a RINO, or “Republican in name only,” while moderates criticize his high-profile snoozefest during the key bill vote.</p><p>“[Republicans] called Biden “Sleepy Joe” for four years, and then [Garbarino] actually slept through the vote. [Halpin] should call him ‘Sleepy Drew’ — he’s got my vote,” Patchogue resident Jennifer Armúngo told The Post.</p><p>Halpin closed out his announcement by saying voters are “tired of the dysfunction” — and argued that Long Island “deserves better” than what it’s getting in Washington.</p><p>Garbarino’s team fired back at the former county executive, who they called “High Tax” Halpin.</p><p>“First [Halpin] voted for progressive policies in Albany, then he tried to ruin Suffolk County before he was thrown out of office after one term, and now he wants to ruin the country by voting for progressive policies in Washington, D.C. — how many government pensions does this guy want,” said Anthony Pileggi, Senior Campaign Aide for Garbarino.</p><p></p>

He followed the rite of passage of many teens <span style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);"><strong style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">working the counter at the McDonald’s</strong></span> on Montauk Highway in Lindenhurst. But even at that age, Pat was a voracious reader of newspapers and history, deeply curious about both local affairs and global events. At West Babylon High School, he <span style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);"><strong style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">served as student body president</strong></span>—and when 18-year-olds gained the right to vote, Pat organized a field trip for 450 seniors to the Board of Elections in Yaphank so they could register. <p>By Billy House</p><p><span style="color: var(--color-text-accent-secondary); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text-accent-secondary);"><a href="https://www.newsday.com/long-island/politics/long-island-house-races-pl5esxvo" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Link to Article in Newsday</a></span></p><p>WASHINGTON — With the past week’s congressional primaries determining the foes for Long Island’s two Republican and two Democratic U.S. House members in this fall’s elections, their races are on and opening salvos are flying.</p><p>A net gain of just three or four seats by Democrats nationally could flip the current narrow GOP majority. And at least two of the Island’s congressional districts, and potentially a third, are viewed by independent forecasters as among key battlegrounds.</p><p>"Because of its size and the number of competitive seats — maybe as many as four or even five — New York will be absolutely critical to the battle for the House," said Donald Nieman, a history professor and provost emeritus at Binghamton University, who counts the Long Island districts among those.</p><p>Erin Covey, a House elections expert with The Cook Political Report, a nonpartisan handicapper, agreed that Long Island could be a key battleground.</p><p>Covey rates the districts held by Democrats Tom Suozzi (D-Glen Cove) and Laura Gillen (D-Rockville Centre) as competitive, though both incumbents are still favored, and the district held by Republican Nick LaLota (R-Amityville) as "potentially competitive." The Island’s fourth district, represented by Republican Andrew Garbarino (R-Bayport), is not on many lists as being competitive, though that could change in&nbsp;a Democratic wave.</p><p>Here are the Long Island congressional matchups, and some of the opening shots being fired by the candidates:</p><h5>District 1</h5><p>This race for the seat now held by LaLota, 48, remains in the "solid Republican" category by the Cook Report. Still, some analysts don’t rule out that it could shift, especially in a political environment where Trump’s ratings continue to dive.</p><p>As LaLota seeks a third term, his Democratic challenger is Christopher Gallant, 37, of Amity Harbor. He is an Army National Guard Blackhawk pilot, former FAA air traffic controller&nbsp;and Suffolk County volunteer firefighter. Neither candidate actually lives in the district, which is not a requirement under the U.S. Constitution.</p><p>Gallant is hitting LaLota for voting for Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill — despite, he says, publicly promising to oppose deeper Medicaid cuts that the legislation carried. He also notes that LaLota recently threatened — in a letter Newsday has reported on — to withhold federal Community Project Funding from East End municipalities that declined to expand Immigration and Customs Enforcement cooperation in their communities.</p><p>"Nick LaLota promised to protect your healthcare and broke that promise. He took credit for delivering federal dollars to our towns, then threatened to take that money away," Gallant said.</p><p>LaLota is a U.S. Naval Academy graduate who served for 11 years, including his time at the academy.&nbsp;He is hitting back, including trying to tie Gallant to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and "the socialist wing" of "far-left candidates."</p><p>"My opponent’s support for East Hampton's first-in-Suffolk ban of what had been longstanding cooperation between local and federal law enforcement is more Mamdani than mainstream," LaLota said.&nbsp; His campaign also said in a statement that Gallant has has publicly supported positions aligned with defunding ICE and expanding sanctuary city policies.</p><p>Meanwhile, LaLota said he led efforts in Congress to "quadruple" the state and local tax deduction cap, or SALT, reduce other taxes "and secure federal funding for Long Island priorities, including clean water, infrastructure&nbsp;and public safety.</p><h5><span style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">District 2</span></h5><p>This race for the seat held by Garbarino, 41, comes as the second congressional district is also viewed by the Cook Report as "solidly Republican," despite an edge in active voters enrolled as Democrats, and with a&nbsp;significant chunk of independents.</p><p>But Garbarino’s challenger, former Suffolk County Executive Patrick Halpin, 73, of Oak Beach, says the political analysts are falling behind what is happening on the ground. As Trump’s approval numbers are falling into the low 30s within the district, he says, the tide is turning on the South Shore.</p><p>"Long Islanders want their elected leaders to lower costs, fix Social Security, provide affordable healthcare, ensure their safety, and deliver clean air and safe drinking water," Halpin says.</p><p>Garbarino, chair of the House Committee on Homeland Security, said&nbsp;he has "concern" over the direction of the Democratic Party, because of wins by democratic socialists in three New York City congressional primary races this past week.</p><p>"I’m focused on delivering results, whether it’s increasing the SALT deduction, keeping our country safe, or supporting law enforcement," he said.</p><h5><span style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">District 3</span></h5><p>This race for the seat held by Suozzi, 63, is seen as competitive, though rated a "lean Democrat" contest as of this week&nbsp;by the Cook Report. It features a rematch with former GOP Assemb. Michael LiPetri, 35, of Farmingdale, whom Suozzi defeated two years ago by less than 4 percentage points.</p><p>Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman’s spot atop the November ballot — as the GOP nominee for governor — could be an added draw for Republican voters. Still, LiPetri lost two years ago with Trump atop the ballot.</p><p>"What we’re seeing is classic Tom Suozzi — someone who has always campaigned as a moderate, then caves to the far-left once he’s in office," said LiPetri, who has also drawn attention to Suozzi's stock market activity while serving in Congress.</p><p>LiPetri also points to instances such as Suozzi’s flip-flop earlier this year in initially crossing party lines to support a funding bill for the Department of Homeland Security that included funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, only to reverse himself after an ICE agent shot and killed a woman in Minneapolis.</p><p>LiPetri seeks to tie Suozzi to the ascendance of socialist democrat politicians in New York City. Suozzi in recent weeks has held news conferences to underscore that he has signed a pledge to be "mainstream, not extreme," and "capitalist,&nbsp;not socialist."</p><p>Kim Devlin, a Suozzi spokesman, said, "Voters have a clear choice between Tom Suozzi — an independent fighter who works across party lines to lower costs and get things done — and Mike LiPetri, a MAGA extremist who supports inflation-driving tariffs, costly wars, cuts to Medicare and Medicaid, and who may or may not live in the district."</p><h5><span style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">District 4</span></h5><p>This race for the seat held by freshman Rep. Gillen, 56, is also seen as "lean Democrat" but competitive by the Cook Political Report. Gillen is challenged by Jeanine Driscoll, 59, of the Village of Bellerose, the twice-elected sitting Hempstead receiver of taxes.</p><p>Driscoll on Tuesday night grabbed more than 90% of the support in her GOP primary race — the highest percentage of any of the Long Island congressional candidates for Congress of either party.</p><p>"This campaign will provide voters with a real choice between Laura Gillen’s record of raising taxes and my work to provide relief to Nassau homeowners," Driscoll said&nbsp;after her primary victory.</p><p>Gillen's campaign said she is&nbsp;focused on lowering costs, protecting taxpayers and delivering results for working families. It also took a swipe at Driscoll for being a "tax-hiking insider" and the Nassau GOP establishment’s "backup candidate." That is a reference to former Rep. Anthony D’Esposito, who lost to Gillen in 2024, and decided not to seek a rematch.</p><p>Gillen has also signed the pledge to be "mainstream, not extreme," and "capitalist, not socialist."</p><p>"Long Islanders know Laura Gillen is on their side," Gillen’s campaign said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>By Billy House</p><p><a href="https://www.newsday.com/long-island/politics/garbarino-halpin-hochul-blizzard-dr0kn1gg" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Link to Article in Newsday</a></p><p>WASHINGTON — New York's quest for disaster relief for an expensive February blizzard has turned political, with state Democrats slamming President Donald Trump while the administration and its Republican allies fire back that the state's request didn't meet the requirements.</p><p>There was heated rhetoric in a Suffolk congressional race, where&nbsp;U.S. Rep. Andrew Garbarino’s Democratic challenger said Friday that the congressman is missing in action while Trump blocks Gov. Kathy Hochul’s request for disaster recovery aid — though Garbarino’s office said Hochul hasn't reached out for help.</p><p>Patrick Halpin, the former Suffolk County executive who is challenging Garbarino, said on Friday that the congressman&nbsp;is "nowhere to be found" and has shown "zero influence that matters," despite being&nbsp;chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security, which has&nbsp;oversight of the agency that provides disaster aid.</p><p>Halpin says Long Islanders and other New Yorkers are left with a question: "If Andrew Garbarino cannot or will not use the power of the chairmanship to protect New York from his own party's decisions, then whose interests is he actually representing?"</p><p>But Garbarino’s office says he has, in fact, been "engaged" in talks with the administration. However, it says Hochul — who as governor is required to apply on behalf of the state — never reached out to him, and that the application she turned in on behalf of New York failed to meet the&nbsp;requirements.</p><p>"According to FEMA, more than 90% of Gov. Hochul’s request was for reimbursement of the State’s snow removal operations was for plowing, which is viewed to be a state and local government responsibility," Garbarino’s office said.&nbsp;</p><p>After&nbsp;a natural disaster, state and local governments can request&nbsp;a federal declaration that could activate Federal Emergency Management Agency assistance. The decision rests with the president.</p><p>The Trump rebuff to New York has received national attention because it was one of four Democratic-led states that Trump denied disaster aid for last week — along with New Jersey, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Those denials came just two days after Trump had approved FEMA disaster aid for six Republican-led states.</p><p>But a FEMA spokesperson said in a statement to Newsday that partisan politics was not involved, and that, "FEMA worked closely with the State of New York to collect and analyze damage information."</p><p>New York’s two Democratic senators themselves got publicly involved in asking Trump to approve Hochul’s request in an April letter that explained why they believed the thresholds for federal assistance are, in fact, met.</p><p>Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand this week urged the Trump administration to reconsider its denial.</p><p>"In the wake of February's record-breaking blizzard, our local governments stepped up to protect residents and save lives. Our municipal partners shouldn't be penalized for doing the right thing," Gillibrand said. "The federal government must pay its fair share to support New York’s full recovery, and I urge the administration to reconsider this short-sighted decision."</p><p>The governor’s application for the disaster declaration included an&nbsp;estimate putting the damage to New York statewide at $79 million. Hochul had 30 days from the denial&nbsp;to appeal, and she is doing so, her office says.</p><p>Garbarino's office, meanwhile, while indicating the state does not have a case for a disaster declaration in this matter, said he remains committed to working with the administration on homeland security and disaster-support issues on behalf of Long Island and communities across New York.</p><p>But Halpin, in his statement Friday, echoed claims by Democrats in Congress that the administration has been withholding homeland security preparedness funding in an effort to make some states accede to his election-administration demands.</p><p>"This MAGA Congress and Administration have politicized even the most fundamental responsibilities of government," Halpin said. "Disaster relief has become political leverage."&nbsp;</p>

<h5>By Billy House</h5><p><span style="color: var(--color-text-accent-secondary); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text-accent-secondary);"><a href="https://www.newsday.com/long-island/politics/suozzi-garbarino-lalota-epniluxy" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Link to Article in Newsday</a></span></p><p>WASHINGTON — Three of Long Island’s four U.S. House members say they won't be starting partisan fights by endorsing each other's election challengers, abiding by the non-aggression rule of a bipartisan group they’ve joined in Washington.</p><p>Democratic Rep. Tom Suozzi and GOP Reps. Nick LaLota and Andrew Garbarino each confirmed this week that they won't be endorsing against each other following this week’s primary elections that settled which Republican and which Democrats will be running against them.</p><p>They also are not endorsing challengers to any of the dozens of congressional colleagues nationally who sit across the political aisle from them but are members of the self-described Problem Solvers Caucus.</p><p>Majority control of the U.S. House, now narrowly held by Republicans, could teeter on just a handful of net seat gains or losses by either party in this fall’s elections.</p><p>"It's a bit of a head-scratcher," said Donald Nieman, a history professor at Binghamton University, though he noted all three represent politically swingy areas and have built personal brands around bipartisanship.</p><p>"But bottom line," Nieman said, "they're politicians who have grown up in a world where parties are weak and don't mean much to voters or to candidates themselves. It's every person for him or herself."</p><p>On the other hand, veteran New York Democratic political consultant Hank Sheinkopf said positive relationships could have benefits. "Less intense competition, one might argue, gets more done for Long Island when representatives from all sides of the aisle cooperate," Sheinkopf said.</p><h5>Seeking collaboration</h5><p>A spokeswoman for Suozzi (D-Glen Cove)&nbsp;pointed to the bylaws of the Problem Solvers group, which Suozzi co-chairs. "Congressman Suozzi is precluded from getting involved in campaigns against the Problem Solvers Caucus," Kim Devlin said.</p><p>In a separate statement, Garbarino (R-Bayport) said, "As Vice Chair of the Problem Solvers Caucus, I stand by our mission to find consensus, not fuel division. In keeping with the caucus’s goal of fostering collaboration, its members are prohibited from endorsing against a fellow caucus member."</p><p>LaLota (R-Amityville) offered in a statement saying that, "While I hold strong common-sense conservative values, I am a member of the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus because I believe partisan gridlock serves no one and that compromise is often necessary to move America forward."</p><p>Long Island's fourth U.S. representative, Rep. Laura Gillen (D-Rockville Centre), is not a member of the Problem Solvers. Her office did not immediately provide an answer to whether she will endorse the Democrats who are running against LaLota and Garbarino.</p><p>The campaigns of LaLota’s Democratic foe, Chris Gallant, and Suozzi’s GOP foe, Michael LiPetri, each either did not respond or declined to provide comment.</p><p>Multiple sources who are familiar with their activities say at least two of the Long Island challengers extended feelers to the incumbents from their own parties,&nbsp;only to be advised endorsements would not occur because of the Problem Solvers' no-endorsement rule.</p><p>Garbarino’s Democratic foe, Patrick Halpin, in an interview on Friday, confirmed that he had discussed with Suozzi an endorsement. But he said Suozzi told him, without any prompting, "You know, I’m not endorsing anybody because of the Problem Solvers." Halpin underscored, "It was Suozzi who brought it up to me!"</p><p>"I’ve never asked Suozzi for an endorsement," Halpin went on, asserting that nobody in the 2nd Congressional District would care about one.</p><p>But Halpin went on to blast Suozzi — as well as Garbarino and LaLota — for their non-endorsement pact and "wanting to sing Kumbaya together while the middle class is getting hit right and left."</p><p>He also ridiculed the Problem Solvers as a group with no history of real legislative or other accomplishments, beyond, he said, being a "fig leaf" for its MAGA members to claim bipartisanship, with the cooperation of Suozzi and other Democrats.</p><p>The caucus, founded in 2017, is an offshoot of the nonpartisan group No Labels and was devised to be a critical voting bloc, its membership a balanced mix of Republicans and Democrats. Devlin, Suozzi's spokesman, had no comment on Halpin's remarks.</p><h5><span style="color: var(--color-text); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text);">Regional cooperation</span></h5><p>Steve Israel, a former Long Island congressman who chaired the House Democratic caucus’ campaign arm, said it makes sense for members of Congress, especially those from the same region, to maintain good relationships. "At the end of the day, you have to get past the politics and govern together."</p><p>"I had a similar arrangement, but a bit less formal and more of an implicit understanding," Israel said. "The understanding was that we might have to endorse a candidate in our party, but it wouldn’t be bombastic, wouldn’t criticize the member, and everyone would get advanced notice. It did make the climate easier and more productive when we had to get in a room and discuss regional issues."</p><p>The relevant section of the group’s bylaws shown to Newsday states: "Members will not actively oppose fellow Caucus members." It says that means: "Not endorsing candidates running against fellow Caucus members, including not engaging in any way, shape or form directly or indirectly against any fellow Caucus member" either in a primary or general election.</p><p>Caucus members who are found in breach of these standards can receive a formal warning on a first offense. They are at risk of being banished for a second offense to "inactive status" for the remainder of the two-year Congress.</p><p>"It is said there are no friendships in Congress but, strictly speaking, that’s not true — especially when it comes to members of informal caucuses like Problem Solvers," said Ross Baker, a political scientist at Rutgers University.</p><p>Lawmakers form such non-aggression pacts with fellow incumbents knowing their respective challengers, if elected, "might not be so collegial."</p>
